What is an IP address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is the number that identifies your connection on the internet. Every website you visit sees it. Your public IP is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and is shared by every device on your home or office network.
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42 and are running out. IPv6 addresses such as 2001:db8::1 are much longer and are being rolled out by ISPs worldwide. Many connections now have both.
IP geolocation is approximate. It usually points to your ISP's nearest network hub, not your street address.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my IP address?
Open this page. Your public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are shown at the top and can be copied with one click.
Why is my IPv6 address not detected?
Your ISP or router may not support IPv6 yet, or it may be disabled on your device. Your IPv4 address still works normally.
Is my IP location accurate?
IP location is usually accurate to the country and often the city, but it reflects your ISP's network location, not your exact address.
Why does my browser time zone differ from my IP time zone?
This often means you are using a VPN, proxy or mobile network that routes your traffic through another region.
Can I look up the IP address of a website?
Yes. Type a domain such as google.com into the lookup box. We resolve its IPv4 and IPv6 addresses over secure DNS and show where the server is and which network runs it.
Is my public IP the same as my local IP?
No. Your local IP (such as 192.168.1.10) is used inside your home network. Your public IP is what the internet sees.
